FAMILY SCULPTURE DEMONSTRATION (FAMILY DYNAMICS/CHILDREN OF ALCOHOLICS)–
LESSON PLAN
http://www.col-ed.org/cur/sci/sci77.txt
A lesson plan for grades 7-12 in which a "family sculpture"
is created with students playing the roles of
different members of
a family as described by the teacher. "OVERVIEW: In an average class of 25
students, between 4 and 6 are Children of Alcoholics (COAs). There will also be
children
from homes disrupted by other family dysfunctions who have much in
common with COAs.
In these families members tend to adjust their behaviors and
take on certain roles to cope with
the family problem. These survival roles
frequently become compulsive, choiceless, and
self-destructive. PURPOSE: To
empower participants by giving them some tools to examine their
lives, not to
tell them that the way they are behaving is dysfunctional or based strictly on
dysfunction." Better than this description makes it sound. Excellent
UNDERSTANDING ALCOHOL TEACHING MODULE
http://science.education.nih.gov/supplements/nih3/alcohol/guide/guide_toc.htm
A web-based teaching module with six lessons, activities and
worksheets. "Understanding Alcohol:
Investigations into Biology and
Behavior has four objectives. The first is to help students
understand how
alcohol consumption affects the functioning of the body. By focusing on the
scientific issues that explain how the body reacts to alcohol, the module seeks
to help students
make informed decisions about the use of alcohol in their
lives.
The second objective is to use the topic of alcohol as a way
to understand important scientific
concepts. The activities in this module
incorporate concepts such as concentration and solubility
(miscibility), as well
as build important skills in observation, critical thinking, experimental
design, and data analysis. The third objective is to convey to students the
purpose of scientific
research. Scientific research changes the way we
understand the world around us and gives
us the foundation for improving our
choices about our personal health and the health of the public. In this module,
students see that science provides evidence that can be used to support ways of
understanding and treating human
disease. Because the mission of NIAAA includes
increasing the public’s understanding about
the causes, consequences, treatment,
and prevention of alcoholism and alcohol-related problems,
the Institute
believes that education provides one context in which it can fulfill its
mission.
We have designed the lessons in this module to encourage
students to think about the relationships
among knowledge, choice, behavior, and
enhanced human health in this way:..." The final
objective is to encourage students to think in
terms of these relationships now and as they grow older."

INCREASING ALCOHOL AWARENESS – WEBQUEST
http://www.scs.k12.tn.us/SCS/trpages/hs_webquests/chs_webquest1/webquest.htm
A webquest designed to increase teens awareness of alcohol and the issues of
teen alcohol use. "Have
you ever wondered why there is so much hype about
underage drinking? Do you ever think "Why
are adults so uptight about
drinking?". Do you ask yourself "How bad can drinking be anyway?".
Do you wonder
why governments and agencies spend so much money and time to make and
support
laws around alcohol? There does seem to be a lot of energy associated with
alcohol
use in this country. It's always in the news and in the media. There are
many laws associated
with drinking. Adults always seem to be hounding young
people about underage drinking.

beverage production is the livelihood of the town, making alcohol easy for teens

town is in conflict because
of a recent DUI accident, in which three children
ages 6, 8, and 10, were killed while walking
home from school, by a 16-year-old

goes to trial, then it
