FIRST MOTION PICTURE UNIT NEW!

The story of the military’s first motion
picture unit to produce recruiting, training and propaganda films

'First Motion Picture Unit', or F.M.P.U., the unit was formed in
1942 as the 18th Air Force Base Unit of the U.S. Army Air Corps,
to produce training films, morale films, and propaganda films.
The operation was eventually located at Hal Roach Studios in
Culver City, California, which was called 'Fort Roach'; the
abbreviation F.M.P.U. was/is pronounced 'fum-poo'.
Soon after the United States was
propelled into active engagement in World War II, General 'Hap'
Arnold, then head of the Army Air Force, saw the need to make
films for training and for morale & propaganda, and he asked
Warner Bros. studio head Jack L. Warner for help. Warner took
Owen Crump with him to Washington DC, and the deal was struck.
The first F.M.P.U. production,
"Winning Your Wings", was made at Warner's studio in Burbank, for
the purpose of getting much-needed enlistments; the short film
was released theatrically in May 1942, and is credited with

LESSON PLANS & CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES
ADOLF HITLER: WAS HITLER A PASSIONATE LUNATIC?
– LESSON PLAN NEW!
http://www.learningcurve.gov.uk/snapshots/snapshot06/snapshot6.htm
A lesson plan using primary documents for
grades 9 and up on Hitler. "Hitler is perhaps one of the
most notorious characters of the 20th century. We know what
atrocities were committed during the 12 years that Hitler led
Nazi Germany and therefore, we have very firm opinions about him.
Using hindsight (looking back with the knowledge of what has
happened) we often ask why he was not stopped earlier. However,
at the time, people could not predict what he would go on to do.
Or could they?
By looking at sources from the time, we can
see how people viewed him. Was he regarded as a "passionate
lunatic" who would wreak havoc all over Europe? Or a slightly odd
eccentric who was rebuilding Germany?
The sources below are from 1937. By this time
Hitler had begun to reverse the Treaty of Versailles by
rebuilding his army and moving troops into the Rhineland. He had
also tried to unite Germany and Austria. Throughout this time he
made passionate speeches about expanding German territory. These
words and deeds worried some foreign observers."

War II posters, chosen from online collections, to explore how
argument, persuasion, and propaganda differ. The lesson begins
with a full-class exploration of the famous "I WANT YOU FOR U.S.
ARMY" poster, featuring a determined Uncle Sam. Students’
individual analysis projects can focus on any World War II
poster.
The available collections include not only
American posters, but also posters from Canada, Great Britain,
Germany, and the Soviet Union. Students complete an online
analysis and submit either an analysis worksheet or use their

CLASSROOM ACTIVITY NEW!
http://www.learningcurve.gov.uk/snapshots/snapshot26/snapshot26.htm
A classroom activity for senior high schools
on the liberation of the Belsen concentration camp using primary
sources. "The outside world knew of the camps even before
the war, but took little notice of reports of what they were

PLAN NEW!

A lesson plan using original documents for
grades 9 and up on the British response to the threat of German
missiles. "It was then that intelligence of a new threat to
Britain's cities began to emerge - missiles and rockets. The V1
missile, once launched, flew without a pilot until it ran out of
fuel and came crashing down, blowing up. The V2 rocket was a long
distance weapon that could travel at the speed of sound. You will
investigate how serious a threat these weapons were to Britain in
1943." Excellent

A lesson plan for grades 5-8 on the internment
of Japanese Americans in World War II. "In this lesson,
students will come to understand a somber period in American
history. During World War II the U.S. government ordered more
than 120,000 Japanese Americans to detainment camps—the only
reason given: being Japanese American. Drawing upon research and
analyzing a variety of sources—including the historical novel The
Journal of Ben Uchida, firsthand accounts, government documents,
and select portions of the Bill of Rights to the U.S.
Constitution—students will write dramatic monologues that testify
to some of the injustices of this period." Excellent

HITLER ASSASSINATION PLAN: HOW DID THE BRITISH
PLAN TO KILL HITLER? – LESSON PLAN NEW!
http://www.learningcurve.gov.uk/snapshots/snapshot17/snapshot17.htm
A lesson plan using primary documents for
grades 9 and up on a British plan to assassinate Hitler.
"In 1944 the SOE (Special Operations Executive) drew up some
plans to kill Hitler. The documents you are about to look at
detail two of the proposed assassination plans that formed part
of Operation Foxley.
You are going back to 1944. As Head of SOE it
is your job is to decide which of two ways of killing Hitler
should be given the go-ahead. You must look at the dangers
involved and the chances of success. When these plans were
revealed in July 1998 they caused world media interest. This is a
unique chance to work with these original and secret documents."
Excellent
IMAGES AT WAR – LESSON PLAN
NEW!
http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=273
A lesson plan for grades 9-12 on photographs
of war scenes. "Visual materials can speak of the past with
such immediacy that we feel ourselves in the presence of those
times, drawn to knowledge by the power of emotion. Yet, like all
documentary materials, images of the past carry contextual
information which, after careful analysis, may reveal as much
about the past as the evidence presented to our eyes."

IN THE STYLE OF ERNIE PYLE: REPORTING ON WORLD
WAR II – LESSON PLAN NEW!
http://www.readwritethink.org/lessons/lesson_view.asp?id=1107

World War II. "Enhance your students’ study of World War II
by encouraging them to become journalists and write a report in
the style of one of that era’s great reporters, Ernie Pyle.
Students first research Pyle’s life and work before analyzing one
of his columns and then writing their own. They also practice
critical thinking and collaboration by working together to
determine the strengths in Pyle’s writing and using these
criteria to peer review each other’s work. By modeling their
writing on an existing primary source, students learn about the
time period and become more confident in their ability to write
descriptively and effectively." Excellent

http://edsitement.neh.gov/view_lesson_plan.asp?id=753
A curriculum unit for grades 9-12 on the U.S.
involvement in World War II. "The question of how involved
the United States should become in the European war deeply
divided the country. On the one hand, Roosevelt and the so-called
"internationalists" claimed that a program of aid to Great
Britain and other countries fighting against Germany would make
actual U.S. participation in the war unnecessary. On the other
side stood those who were called "isolationists," who believed
that the president's policies were making it increasingly likely
that the country would end up in another disastrous foreign war.
This debate was still raging when Japanese aircraft attacked
Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. At this point it was clear
that, like it or not, the United States would be a full
participant in the Second World War." Contains four
lessons. Excellent

the United States must become involved in the war. Franklin
D. Roosevelt is ready to lead American into World War II, but he
needs the support of the people. Isolationists, such as
Charles "Lucky Lindy" Lindbergh, have formed the America First
Committee to keep America out of the war.
You are a member of a three person, top notch,
political consulting team that Franklin D. Roosevelt has brought
in to direct the
campaign to convince the American people that
the United States needs to go to war. Roosevelt has asked

THE ATOMIC BOMB IN WORLD WAR II – WEBQUEST
NEW!
http://questgarden.com/63/48/0/080331193527/index.htm
A webquest for high school students on the use
of the atomic bomb to end the war with Japan. " In
August of 1945, during World War II, the United States dropped
two atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan. This
action was followed by the surrender of Japanese forces but also
resulted in the loss of tens of thousands of lives. It is
the job of you, the student, to determine whether or not this
measure by the United States was justifiable in this conflict.
There are major ethical implications that need to be explored in
this context but there is also a wealth of information that one
can use to determine what other paths could have been followed in
resolving this conflict. This project will guide you on a
quest to learn the circumstances surrounding the development of
this weaponry, the United States' involvement in the conflict,
communications between Japan and the United States, and possible
alternatives (or lack thereof) to the bombings themselves.
This information taken from both sides involved will lead you to
thoughtfully draw your own conclusions based on the actions taken
by those involved in the war." Excellent

INVESTIGATING WORLD WAR I AND II ALLIANCES –
WEBQUEST NEW!
http://questgarden.com/75/89/1/090124155821/
A webquest on World War I and II alliances for
upper elementary students. "Your task seems quite
simple-research both World War I and World War II. You will use
this research to create a Power Point in order to present your
ideas for the commemorative insert to the editor of The
Greenville Times as well as various other employees.
The focus of your research should include: the countries present
in each of the alliances that existed during both World Wars; and
the impact that each of the respective alliances had on the war,
other countries, and on the world in general. A word to the
wise-although this task seems overly simple, do not be fooled.
Any good journalist knows that he must have more information and
research than what he needs for his article requirements. This
way, when he writes the article, the information he uses is all
substantial and necessary; none of his writing is just "fluff" or
"filler information." So, to sum it up: you should have enough
information to fill a two page spread in The Greenville
Times, a draft of the spread to turn in to your editor,
corresponding photos and captions, and a Power Point prepared to
discuss your ideas for the commemorative insert to the editor. I
know you can and will do well! Now get to work!"

timetravlers have gathered. Five other groups of historians have
come before you; their outcome is not yet known. Your group
nervously enters the home, where tall bleakers of bubbling green
and purple fluid suspend above your head. The timetravelers eye
you suspiciously as you walk into the dark and damp room; some
drum their fingers and others roll their eyes. Nervous and
anxious, as historians your whole entire career could depend upon
this moment. Your group stands in front of the room and begins.
It is your group's job to convince them of what they should do or
see when they go; why is your theme worth their time? What should
these travelers know ahead of time? Include how your theme had
implications for the future." Excellent
